CLINICAL LIAISON ABORIGINAL & TORRES STRAIT ISLANDERS

CLAIS (Clinical Liaison Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders) provides culturally competent counselling/ mentoring for clients, as well as other GCDC services, to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander young people and their families where a need has been identified.

Who?
Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander young people and their families, within the Gold Coast region, who are experiencing problems with drug and alcohol and may be experiencing mental health disorders. We also take referrals from community based organisations and other relevant agencies.

How?
- The CLAIS team works with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander clients who are accessing GCDC programs and services
- We provide supportive counselling and outreach activities with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander clients who are residents of the Mirikai Therapeutic Community
- Our service also assists Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander clients in the community
- The CLAIS program aims to work with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander families to improve their relationships and community support
- CLAIS provides targeted interventions to minimise the risk to families in relation to substance use and the associated harms
- CLAIS provides advocacy and education around issues of equity within the community for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander clients

Where?
CLAIS is based in the Banjara Medical building at the Gold Coast Drug Council. We also provide appointments for clients at venues that may be more suitable for the young people and their families.

Objectives?

To engage and encourage Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander young people and their families who are wanting to make a positive change in their lives. To ensure that a positive cultural perspective is provided for CLAIS clients. To access appropriate services for CLAIS clients. To ensure that regular contact is kept with CLAIS clients. Provide support for CLAIS clients and family members.

CLAIS is a free service provided by the Gold Coast Drug Council Inc.
